Citizenship Academy received funding under the Catalyst of Change – NHC programme for the development of the project “Why Do We Protest?”, a documentary web series dedicated to the analysis and representation of civic space and climate activism in Portugal. The project emerges in a context of increasing pressure on civic space, marked by attempts to restrict the right to protest, disinformation campaigns, and processes of stigmatisation and criminalisation of activists, particularly in the climate field. These dynamics have contributed to the construction of public narratives that devalue or distort the role of activism as a legitimate expression of democratic participation. Framework and Objectives “Why Do We Protest?” seeks to contribute to a more informed public understanding of protest and civic participation by giving visibility to the motivations, practices, and democratic frameworks of climate activism in Portugal. The project is aligned with the objectives of the Catalyst of Change – […]

The main purpose of this Platform is “to defend and promote human rights and to create synergies between organizations actively working in the field of human rights in Portugal, without replacing their actions.” The PDH currently has 23 organizations from different areas of activity, spread across the mainland and islands. The defense of human rights is one of the main concerns of Academia Cidadã, especially at a time when these rights are even more threatened. We believe that this struggle, like all others, can only be fought collectively, with organization and cooperation. We hope to contribute to the development of the Platform and its current and future projects.

Throughout the severe housing crisis, we face, which seems to have no end in sight, other problems associated with the spaces we use for living arise. When we talk about housing, we also talk about support networks, neighborhood, and community. The bonds that should naturally arise from proximity and coexistence are no longer created. The elderly do not have a support network, often being closed off in the solitude of their homes. Spaces for children, culture, and socialization are not prioritized over real estate speculation. All this is taken away from the population, destroying, or not giving the opportunity to build, community, solidarity, and security. Cultural and social spaces also suffer from the gentrification of cities, ending up unable to keep up with rent values and the consequent non-renewal of contracts. It is thanks to these spaces that meetings, conversations, and debates on different topics are possible. They welcome different […]

Rabat, Malta| 22nd- 28th April 2019 DESCRIPTION Life on a screen: Understanding Millennial Training Course will be addressing the gap which exists between young people and Youth Workers working within the non-formal sector of education. Young people are being brought up in an environment which is fast, instant and customizable. Therefore, they are being used to environments which are constantly engaging and stimulating. When young people are given something which is less attractive and engaging they have the tendency to turn back to their smart phones. It is very difficult for youth workers to compete with such environments where young people are continuously being stimulated. Therefore, the best way forward is not to compete, but to learn from what is happening on social media and adapt these characteristics and infuse them in the working methods used by youth workers. The Millennials are those born after 1985, thus they grew up in […]
