“Outros Campeonatos” moves Onwards and Upwards

There is a cycle that comes to an end in “Outros Campeonatos” from which emerge created relationships, work done and the joint effort of opening the neighborhood to other communities scattered throughout the city.

The visits that were scheduled for these first months of the project have come to an end, with the presence of Campolide Soma&Segue – E6G in Quinta do Cabrinha.

There is a sense of satisfaction for everything that has been done so far within the community of Quinta do Cabrinha. It was very unlikely that anyone who came here during these months would have done otherwise. This is also the job, yes, to provide these meetings, but that is not what it tastes like. It is important to see things happening with the eyes of those who see and what we see is growth. Growth that happens in the relationship with others and with the collaboration of many people of the community in the organization of this event. It’s good to see that what was inside our heads before, have now happened.

Mica brought a basketball to Quinta do Cabrinha and that’s how the day started. It is good to change and experience different sports, different ways of moving the body and playing as a team.

The calendar requirements made the visitors to be less than what we were accustomed to but that was not even noticeable. What was scheduled happened and ran for the better. Everyone had a great time, everyone shared time, talk and food. The good things about being together and in community.

The route of the visit was the one we have become accustomed to. Do sports in the morning (with street football always present),, have lunch in the heart of the neighborhood. Once again we were greeted by “Águias Recreativo Clube”, with all the sympathy that we felt every day (and this time we were so lucky to have a dessert prepared and offered by Cíntia and Rafa, thank you very much!). During the afternoon UM OUTRO OLHAR took us through the Alcantâra valley and its old factories, ending in the wonderful devices of Pietro in the bookshop “Ler Devagar”.

The president of the Parish Council of Alcântara, Davide Amado, participated in the visit of UM OUTRO OLHAR, with the invitation of Outros Campeonatos. Here we can see him participating in the moment of reading the play that gives the motto to the visit “from Cabrinha to Lisbonense”.

Back in Cabrinha, community, guests and visitors joined for another snack in the common spaces of the neighborhood. This is what we want, to bring people together, to understand and extend experiences, to promote contact.

It feels good to be at Cabrinha and see these things happening.

“Outros Campeonatos” will continue and more activities, visits, trips and games will happen. What we want is things to go on. That they grow beyond what it is possible for us to do.

We promise to continue reporting. Or come to visit us and live this with us firsthand. We would be very happy!

See you soon!

Outros Campeonatos is a project by Academia Cidadã, that aims to promote active citizenship in Quinta do Cabrinha, Alcântara.

Funded by BIP/ZIP from the Municipality of Lisbon with the partnership of District Hall of Alcântara, the youth group “Winds of Change”, the National Association of Street Football and the Lisbon Sustainable Tourism.

Outros Campeonatos will contribute for the social fortification of the neighborhood, promoting community organization, capacity for local initiative and greater democratic awareness. It will also promote an opening of the neighborhood to society in general, reinforcing its integrity in the city. The main strategies of action will be street football and tourism. Street football events draw the inhabitants of the neighborhood to intervene and participate in its organization and implementation – with facilitation of tools and processes of organized citizen participation. Tourism helps rethinking the neighborhood, opening the community to new citizenship experiences.
