70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
What would society be like without non-governmental organisations? What is the relevance of Civil Society for the protection of Human Rights? The 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration is celebrated, but are all human rights guaranteed for all?
On December 10, you will be able to learn about the work of more than 15 civil society organisations that work to protect Human Rights in Portugal.
While celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration today, Human Rights are under threat in Europe by the advance of anti-democratic forces. Therefore, on the 10th we will reflect the role, action and the impact of Civil Society and we will discuss a joint plan between participants and organisations on effective action to protect Human Rights and Democracy at a time when both are threatened.
#NoDayWithoutUs is an event (link to facebook) that will bring together representatives of many NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations) and Portuguese Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Portugal to disseminate the impact of their work on Human Rights. The #NoDayWithoutUs event will promote a discussion on the protection of Human Rights so that we can reach a conclusion on the evaluation of the work of Civil Society in Portugal in this matter.
Why do we organize this event?
Because, on December 10, 2018, the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is celebrated. On this day, the Citizenship Academy, and many other European partner organizations of the European Civic Forum, decided to mobilise itself simultaneously, promoting actions throughout Europe, which mark the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Declaration.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was conceived in 1948, after the II world war where the rights of many people were brutally violated. This war was initiated by Nazi-fascism, which rose to power in many European countries in the previous decade, the 1930s.
We now have again new anti-democratic, xenophobic, racist and ultra-nationalist forces that threaten Human Rights throughout Europe.
On December 10, Civil Society will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Declaration making it clear THERE IS NO DAY WITHOUT US! We will continue to fight for Human Rights and to Make Europe Great for ALL!
MEGA – MAKE EUROPE GREAT FOR ALL is the name of the campaign in which the #NoDayWithoutUs event is entered. Civil Society in Europe is mobilising itself in this campaign through the European Civic Forum to fight together against the threats to Democracy and Human Rights. We want to prevent neofascism from rising to power in the European elections in 2019!
